Heat Pumps
High-efficiency heat pump installation and service for year-round heating and cooling in a single system.
How heat pumps work
Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling in a single system by transferring heat rather than generating it. In cooling mode, they extract heat from inside the building and release it outdoors. In heating mode, the process reverses, extracting heat from the outdoor air and bringing it inside — even when temperatures are well below freezing.
Modern heat pump technology has advanced significantly, with systems now capable of providing efficient heating in climates that were previously considered too cold for heat pump operation. Variable-speed compressors and enhanced vapor injection technology allow heat pumps to maintain heating capacity at outdoor temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Efficiency and savings
Heat pumps are among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling options available. By moving heat rather than generating it, they can deliver three to four times more energy than they consume. This efficiency translates to significant savings on utility bills compared to electric resistance heating, propane, or oil systems.
The efficiency of heat pumps is measured by SEER for cooling and HSPF for heating. High-efficiency models achieve SEER ratings above 20 and HSPF ratings above 10, well above federal minimum standards. The higher the ratings, the lower your annual operating costs.
Types of heat pumps
Air-source heat pumps are the most common type, extracting heat from the outdoor air. They are suitable for most climates and offer the best value for homeowners. Ducted systems integrate with existing ductwork, while ductless mini-split heat pumps provide zoned comfort without ducts.
Geothermal heat pumps use the stable temperature of the ground to provide even greater efficiency. While more expensive to install, geothermal systems offer the lowest operating costs of any heating and cooling system and can last 25 years or more for the indoor components.
Installation considerations
Heat pump installation requires careful sizing and planning to ensure optimal performance. The outdoor unit must be placed on a level pad with proper clearance for airflow. The indoor air handler or ductless units are installed in appropriate locations, and refrigerant lines connect the system components.
Proper sizing through a Manual J load calculation is essential for heat pump performance. An oversized system will short cycle and fail to dehumidify properly, while an undersized system will struggle to maintain comfort during extreme weather. Our technicians ensure your system is properly sized for your specific property.
