Sump Pump Installation
Professional sump pump installation and replacement for basements and crawl spaces to prevent flooding and water damage.
Why sump pumps are essential
Sump pumps are the most effective defense against basement flooding and water damage. They automatically remove water that accumulates in the sump basin, preventing it from rising to the level of your basement floor. Properties with below-grade living spaces, high water tables, or poor drainage around the foundation are prime candidates for sump pump installation.
Without a sump pump, groundwater from rain and snowmelt can seep through foundation walls and floors, causing flooding, mold growth, structural damage, and property loss. A properly installed sump pump system provides automatic protection that activates when water levels rise, even when you are away from home.
Types of sump pumps
Submersible sump pumps are installed inside the sump basin and are designed to operate underwater. They are quieter, more efficient, and longer-lasting than pedestal models, making them the preferred choice for most residential applications. Submersible pumps are available in various horsepower ratings to match your water removal needs.
Pedestal sump pumps have the motor mounted above the basin, making them easier to service and less expensive. They are suitable for smaller applications and are more visible due to the above-basin motor placement. Battery backup sump pumps provide protection during power outages when primary pumps cannot operate.
Installation process
Sump pump installation begins with digging a sump basin in the lowest point of the basement or crawl space. Perforated pipes are laid in a gravel bed to channel groundwater to the basin. The pump is installed in the basin, and a discharge pipe is routed outside the property to carry water away from the foundation.
A check valve is installed on the discharge pipe to prevent water from flowing back into the basin after the pump shuts off. The pump is connected to a dedicated electrical circuit with GFCI protection. For battery backup systems, the backup pump and battery are installed alongside the primary system.
Maintenance and testing
Regular sump pump maintenance ensures reliable operation when you need it most. We recommend testing your sump pump at least twice per year by pouring water into the basin to verify that the pump activates, pumps water out, and shuts off properly. The discharge pipe should be checked for blockages and the inlet screen should be cleaned.
Battery backup systems require periodic battery testing and replacement every 3-5 years depending on battery type. We recommend annual professional inspection of the complete sump pump system including the pump, basin, discharge line, check valve, and backup power system.
